What you have left

...per week, on average

After tax and out-of-pocket childcare, including estimated family payments. Before rent and other living costs.

How it adds up per week

How your childcare cost is worked out

The subsidy reduces your childcare bill. It is not added to your income. Estimates use final annual entitlement; actual bills may include CCS withholding.

Annual figures, based on what you entered. FTB & Rent Assistance shown as fortnightly rates × 26. End‑of‑year supplements are included when the toggle is on.

What your family keeps at different incomes

Bars show net yearly income. Taxable family income is below. Your entered figures are highlighted.

After tax and out-of-pocket childcare, including estimated family payments. Before rent and other living costs. Wage splits are shown as first earner + second earner.

Keeping 48c of a dollar still means keeping $48. Extra work always adds money unless you are on a marked cliff. This shows the price of each option, never whether to take it.

Your keep-rate, zone by zone

Family income from $0 to $160k with your settings (high earners see further). Green shading is the full-rate zone: payments untouched. Red is the squeeze: you keep under half of each extra dollar. Past it, the keep-rate recovers.

Every row is money in your pocket. The squeeze makes some rows thinner; only a marked cliff ever makes a row negative.

Same income, split differently

This is a mathematical comparison only. Wages must reflect work performed; income cannot simply be reassigned between partners. Business and investment income have their own tax rules. This holds your wages at $… and changes only the split. Income tax and Family Tax Benefit B care who earns each dollar.

Questions, answered

The things families ask first

Is my data private?
Yes, completely. Everything is calculated in your browser, on your own device. Your income, rent and family details are never sent to us or stored on any server. We couldn't see your numbers even if we wanted to.
Is this financial advice?
No. This is general, factual information to help you understand how Australia's current tax and benefit settings would apply to a family like yours. It doesn't consider your full circumstances and isn't personal financial or tax advice. For advice specific to you, speak to a licensed financial adviser or registered tax agent.
How accurate is it?
It uses current FY2026–27 ATO tax rates and Services Australia thresholds for Family Tax Benefit A & B, Child Care Subsidy and Rent Assistance. It's a careful estimate to guide a decision, not a Centrelink or ATO determination. See the rates, sources and assumptions. Medicare low-income thresholds use the current law and may be increased retrospectively. Rent Assistance rates are those effective 20 March 2026; review due 20 September 2026.
What income can I model?
Enter annual taxable wages and other taxable income. This version assumes taxable income equals adjusted taxable income. Salary sacrifice, fringe benefits, investment losses, child support, shared care, income-support exemptions and part-year eligibility need a separate calculation. Do not add an amount back to taxable wages here: that would also increase the tax estimate.
Does it tell me to earn less, or to claim more benefits?
Never. It doesn't tell you what to do at all. It only ever shows you what you'd keep at each income, so the decision stays entirely yours.
What does it cost?
Both calculators and their personalised reports are completely free, provided by J & S Hain Tax Advisory. No account or email is required.
How this works & important disclaimer

This tool starts with your annual taxable income, subtracts income tax, Medicare and any selected HELP repayments or Medicare Levy Surcharge, then adds estimated Family Tax Benefit and Rent Assistance. It subtracts childcare fees after the estimated subsidy. Rent and other living costs are not deducted. Weekly figures are annual estimates divided by 52, not a prediction of each pay or Centrelink deposit. Optional comparisons show how different work and income scenarios change the result.

General information and estimates only, based on the figures you enter and rates current as at FY2026–27. This is not financial advice, not tax advice, and not an official Services Australia or ATO determination. Actual entitlements are assessed by Services Australia using your full circumstances. This simplified model assumes taxable income equals adjusted taxable income. It does not model salary sacrifice, fringe benefits, investment losses or child support. Tax and family-payment rates change in July; Rent Assistance changes in March and September. We never tell you what you “should” earn, only what you'd keep at each income. Terms & disclaimer.
